The Q1 results are in for Citywire’s Fantasy Fund of Funds competition and what a dramatic quarter it's been.
The first three months of 2016 have been far from plain sailing, taking in a RMB devaluation, record low oil prices, a commodities crash and generally sluggish global growth.
This backdrop has resulted in some very mixed fortunes for our international editors, which has been borne out in the performance figures of their chosen fund managers. The league table shows a whopping 40% difference between between top and bottom placed portfolios.
However, it is the combination of manager selection and asset allocation that has propelled our Q1 winner Atholl Simpson's performance.
His decision to go big in Japan with potentially the sector's most high conviction manager Hideo Shiozumi, has certainly paid off. Passively allocating to Japanese equities over this period in comparison would have garnered investors a much less impressive return.
In this video, Citywire's head of cross border investment research, Nisha Long, talks us through the results so far and gives an insight into how the contest might shape up in the coming months.
We’ll be running regular Fantasy Fund of Fund updates across our international websites, so make sure you stay tuned to see how our editors fare.
