First State poaches Fidelity EM equity manager

First State poaches Fidelity EM equity manager

First State Stewart has hired Ashish Swarup from Fidelity Worldwide Investments to strengthen its emerging markets and worldwide equity teams, Citywire has learned.

Swarup had overseen two US mutual funds during his 10 year tenure with Fidelity.

These had been the Fidelity Total International Equity fund, which he co-ran with Alexander Zavratsky and Jed Weiss, as well as the Fidelity Emerging Markets Discovery fund, which he ran on his own.

In his new capacity, Swarup joins First State Stewart, a subsidiary of First State Investments which focuses on Asia Pacific, emerging market and global equities.

He will work across the group’s portfolios in emerging market and worldwide equity portfolios.

Swarup, who was based in London, had worked as a portfolio manager, as well as an analyst, predominantly covering emerging markets during his 10 years with Fidelity.

The First State Stewart team is home to some of the firm’s most noted investors, such as Alistair Thompson, Angus Tulloch, David Gait and Quanqiang Xian
