StanChart PB announces series of hires in Asia

Standard Chartered has announced a number of hires to strengthen its private banking and wealth management teams in Greater China and the North Asia (GCNA) region.

It has most recently appointed Harry Lai, who joins from Barclays, as market head, GCNA on 3 January 2017.

In addition, the regional front office team has added 12 new senior relationship managers since October, further enhancing its overall bench strength.

There were media reports in October of a few Barclays bankers joining Standard Chartered in Hong Kong in the aftermath of the Bank of Singapore acquisition.

Lai's appointment follows the hires of Michael Yong-Haron, formerly at RBC, and Alex Tse, formerly at Credit Suisse, as market heads for GCNA in August 2016.

The market heads report to Vivian Chan, whose appointment as regional head, private banking for GCNA, was announced in July 2016.

Chan started in her role on 6 January 2017, bringing more than 30 years of experience and expertise in building businesses and managing UHNW client relationships.

Standard Chartered’s wealth management advisory capability has also been strengthened with the appointments of Barry Chan from Julius Baer as regional head of investment advisory for GCNA in July 2016, and Teddy Chu from Credit Suisse as regional head of trust and fiduciary services, GCNA, in December 2016.

These hires will support the next phase of business growth. StanChart intends to continue with strategic hires of senior industry practitioners in 2017.

Didier von Daeniken, Global Head of Private Banking and Wealth Management said, 'We continue to invest in our private banking and wealth management business. The GCNA region is central to our strategy and we are building a strong team, with half of our targeted global hires in these markets, to provide industry-leading private banking and investment advisory offerings to our clients.'
