Here are the top private bank and asset management moves the Citywire Asia team rounded up for May

Eastspring shakes up leadership team

Eastspring Investments, the Asian asset management business of Prudential, has appointed Ooi Boon Peng as chief executive officer for Singapore and regional fixed income officer.

Ooi replaces Phil Stockwell, who will focus solely on his chief operating officer role. Succeeding Ooi as the chief investment officer for fixed income is Guan Yi Low.

Meanwhile, Michele Bang has stepped down as the head of distribution. She will retain her deputy CEO role, however, and lead Eastspring's digital business model.

Xavier Meyer will succeed Bang as the company’s head of distribution. He joined Eastspring in 2014 as head of product strategy and development before assuming his current role.

Five new hires at Credit Suisse

Credit Suisse has expanded its Asia Pacific team with a series of new hires.

James Scully has been appointed as managing director and head of product sales, and Robert Cheeseman as director and head of prime derivatives services. Scully comes from BNP Paribas while Cheeseman was with Morgan Stanley previously.

Joining from Bank of America Merrill Lynch is Kieran Murphy. He will start in July as director and head of prime consulting.

In Australia, Credit Suisse has hired Eugene Budovsky and Melissa Cooper as the head of low touch. Budovsky joins from Deutsche Bank and Cooper was previously with the Australian Securities Exchange.

BNP Paribas WM names investment specialist

Grace Tam, a former senior market specialist from HSBC Global Asset Management, has joined BNP Paribas Wealth Management.

Tam joined the French private bank as chief investment advisor in Hong Kong, reporting to Asia chief investment officer, Prashant Bhayani.

She will be responsible for formalising and communicating the bank’s asset allocation and investment strategies in Asia.

Credit Suisse hires from Julius Baer

Credit Suisse Private Banking has appointed David Lim as vice chairman for Southeast Asia.

Based in Singapore, he will report to Benjamin Cavalli, head private banking Southeast Asia and chief executive of Singapore.

In his new role, Lim is expected to deepen relationships with clients and stakeholders, provide advice on Credit Suisse’s products and services and develop and mentor new talents.

Ex-Deutsche Bank MD joins Singapore IAM

Former managing director of Deutsche Bank Wealth Management, Mark Smallwood, has joined HP Wealth Management, a Singapore-based independent asset manager. 

Smallwood will act as wealth structuring and client advisor to ultra-high-net-worth clients HP Wealth represents.

He will work with clients on their estate and succession plans as well as their investable assets, through discretionary or advisory mandates and managing the selected fund managers.

UBS appoints Malaysia market head

UBS Global Wealth Management has hired Connie Ong as market head for Malaysia, effective 2 July.

She will report to the wealth management chief of Southeast Asia, August Hatecke. The previous Malaysia market head, Henk de Glint, will remain in the team as senior advisor.

Ong was most recently the market head for Malaysia at Bank of Singapore, where she co-managed the market coverage for two years.

JP Morgan names Asia beta strategies head

JP Morgan Asset Management has appointed Philippe El-Asmar as its head of Asia beta strategies.

In this newly-created role, Hong Kong-based El-Asmar is responsible for accelerating JP Morgan’s Asian beta strategies expansion.

This includes the company’s international investment capabilities in strategic and alternative beta strategies and factor-based investing, as well as its growing global exchange traded funds platform.
