US equity themes worth considering

Among the big themes to watch out for in the US equities for the next decade are cloud computing services, e-commerce and healthcare innovation.

Amid an aging bull market, investors in US equities should consider how to invest in companies that can benefit from the long term trends in the next three, five or ten years, according to Franklin Templeton’s Grant Bowers.

‘What’s really unique I think about this period we are in right now is the digitalisation of the global economy is driving tremendous amount of change,’ he said at a media briefing in Singapore.

Bowers said cloud computing, in particular, is big theme that’s being talked about within the US equities space.

Almost every major company is going through the transformation of moving into cloud computing, which allow companies to store and access data and applications over the Internet instead of on local compute resources.

Citing data from International Data Corporation, Bowers said cloud services spending is estimated to be a $1 trillion opportunity.

Bowers said scale matters in the cloud computing services sector and large cloud players like Amazon, Google and Microsoft are expected to benefit from this trend.

E-commerce is also another big theme to watch within the US equities as more people are buying and selling products via electronic means such as the Internet.

Companies from the healthcare, groceries and apparel sectors are among the companies that are quick to jump on the e-commerce bandwagon. This will benefit companies like Amazon, Paypal, Electronic Arts, as well as Visa and Mastercard.

Meanwhile, the aging population is expected to drive the demand for medicines, medical devices and improved treatments globally. Companies like Celgene, Edwards Life Science and Intuitive Surgical are expected to benefit from this trend.

California-based Bowers is the lead manager of the Franklin Growth Opportunities fund, the FTIF Franklin US Opportunities fund and the FTVIP Franklin Large Cap Growth fund.

The company’s spokesperson said the FTIF Franklin US Opportunities fund is available for sale to retail as well as high net worth investors in Singapore.
